At 211 Degrees water is hot. At 212 degrees, it boils. And with boiling water, comes steam. And steam can power a locomotive.” How powerful is just one degree? From the statement above, it’s pretty powerful. So why do we not give just one extra degree of effort in everything we do if it can make such a powerful impact? Last night I read 212:The Extra Degree by Sam Parker and Mac Anderson. The first 4 sentences of the book make you sit back in your chair and say wow…but the rest of the book really makes you open your eyes to the realization of what one extra degree can do to impact your life. Why is something so simple overlooked by so many? The book goes into the explanation of how the average margin of victory for major tournaments is so minute, that between first and second place was the difference of one extra degree of effort. For example, the two biggest auto races of the year are the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500. Each race takes roughly 3 to 3.5 hours to complete. In the last 10 years of each race combined, the winner took the checkered flag by an average margin of 1.54 seconds. That is the difference of 1st place winning $1,278,813 and 2nd winning $621.321. One extra degree of effort meant the difference of over HALF A MILLION…extra degree of determination paid off. H. Jackson Brown once said, “In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins…not through strength but by perseverance.” Vince Lombardi, the Hall of Fame Football Coach is famous for saying “inches make a champion”. Thomas Edison believed “many of life’s failures are men who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Are you ready to give up too early? Are you on the line of success but fail to give the extra degree to make that win a reality? To get what we’ve never had, we must do what we’ve never done before…don’t stop at 211 degrees because with 1 more degree of effort, of determination, of attitude, of leadership…you create the steam to make the impossible a reality!
