This week’s offer is for FREE Credit Monitoring from Credit Karma. If you choose to sign up for the service, Credit Karma will check your credit file on TransUnion once a day. If your credit file shows any noteworthy change in your account such as: a late payment, a new account opened, or even a inquiry of your credit, you will receive and email notification. Credit Karma CEO and founder Kenneth Lin says, “We’re not going to sell your data. We’re not going to spam you. And we’re not going to charge you.”
Although they are not going to sell your information, they may use your registration profile to match you with offers from their marketing partners. If you OPT IN, (see bottom of sign up page) to be notified by email, they will send you emails. If you don’t opt in, you will see display ads while on their site. Either way, the marketing partners will not see your credit score or credit file.
They only ask for your name, address, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. Credit Karma CEO and founder Kenneth Lin stated this works 90 percent of the time. If you are one of the 10% of people who this does not work for, you will be asked to provide your full SSN to use the service.
Obviously, this not the same protection as you can get from a company that charges for every day monitoring of all three credit bureaus. It is also not as good as doing a full credit freeze, which is the best way to protect your credit. This is for people who want extra protection without extra cost.
